Radon and the High Plains
Cheyenne sits on sediments shed from the granite of the Laramie Range just to the west, and Wyoming soils naturally carry uranium. Radon, the gas that uranium gives off as it decays, rises through that ground and into basements and crawl spaces. Long, cold winters make it worse: when the furnace runs for months and warm air escapes through the upper floors, the house draws soil air in through the foundation.
The Wyoming Department of Health notes that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the state, and the EPA estimates radon is responsible for about 21,000 U.S. lung cancer deaths a year. The good news is that radon is simple to measure and, in most homes, straightforward to reduce.
